5 tips to consider when studying PR

5 tips to consider when studying PR

When I was still in High school, being a Public Relations Practitioner meant being a speaker; however the term is too broad, flexible and dynamic. I am currently a 2nd year PR student and I will be attempting to give the best 5 tips to consider when studying PR.

Be Proactive
In PR you need to be that person that makes things happens; don’t just sit back and wait for things to happen. History is created the minute you get up from that chair and do. We all have dream, aspirations and goals to reach none of which will come true if we wait for them, best practice is to be active and responsive to any situation that might arise.

Love Social Media

Social media is the future, believe me! In order to make wave one needs to be a social media participant; to be up to date on the latest information and trends within industries. Social media can be a tool for getting information across to external stakeholders. As my media lecture Ms M Pritchard normally emphasizes the importance of keeping up with trends, it is through social media that we are able o do that. With many, many social networks available it is very easy to join in on conversations, and to express views and opinion on issues or topics that are trending. Opinion leaders exist in each of us and it is only when we know the correct platforms that we are able to influence others.

Be a Representative (a Speaker)
When I talk of being a speaker I talk of having the correct skills and capabilities to stand in front of an audience either to persuade, motivate and or to educate them. Having the confidence to do that will definitely lead to the success of your career, after all Public Relations involves being conversational while forming, changing and sustaining attitudes, behaviors and actions of others towards the brand. A Public Relations Practitioner is a problem solver and problems are solved through conversations.

Writing

This is my weakest but most important part of Public Relation, we write everything from content on a social media calendar, news releases, speeches and articles. Writing is a huge part of being a great Public Relations Practitioner you aim to be, In order to be a good writer you need to be a constant reader. So it is best to make reading your next BFF.

Events
Public Relations is not only focused on events, but that is another important aspect a Public Relations Practitioner should be able to prefect or handle. From my conversations with prospective Public Relations students many of them feel Public Relations is centered around Events, which is not true, my first year lecture always told us to never sit in the office hoping a campaign goes well, it is always our duty to be the main person who oversees things are going as planned.
