Hello peeps!! With the world going digital I took it to myself to express my thinking on social media and the relevance of journalists in this digital age. Social media according me is a platform for creativity, innovation and expression; Journalists on the other hand are the backseaters behind content that leave us in shock, in joy and in … moments, well the question still remains do we still need journalists in the age of social media?

Journalists!
According to me YESS YESS YESS!!!!!!!!! We certainly do need journalists (SCREAMS). Journalists will always remain relevant irrespective of social media, they help us give meaning to content by organising news, provide accurate and factual news for the readers.
Social media is another layer of giving out news, it adds to our choice in terms of modes of delivery, remember the role of journalists is not only limited to traditional media but also to social media too, think about it! Journalists are using social media as a faster and effective mode of giving out information to the readers as they are free to posts information any time as soon as it happens. Being a Public Relations student I know all about citizen journalists, these are random individuals like you and me who post on anything and everything that happens around them or post on everything that seems to be trending at that time but I think we need journalists in our lives as they help organize information received on social networks in a way that widens our knowledge.

Journalists should take charge
Journalists should not feel threatened by social media instead they could see it as an advantage, check Barry Bateman for instance he is stunning on twitter with 38k tweets, 1343 following and 216k followers, talk about a man with a digital footprint IYOH!!!!

What I'm trying to communicate to you is that social media is a platform to engage with readers, it’s a way to monitor and sustain two-way communication between companies, influencers and journalists themselves. For journalists, social media should be seen as God’s gift to them as they are able to gather information faster, basically make their job much easier and fun at the same time.
Print media should feel threatened by social media as less and lesser people buy newspapers and magazines because every current post in social networks will be old news tomorrow morning when the newspaper comes out.

Deletehey gals, im glad you understand my tackle on this matter, i worry so much that people are loosing the real motives of journalism, journalists write write on those social networks. so we need journalists hey "BIG TIME"
DeleteAMEN TO THAT!!! without journalist all we will get is short versions of stories, like with the corruption that has taken over our country, without journalist we wouldn't know the thing we know because they can do or go places where the citizen journalist won't go.
ReplyDeleteWOW Trudy!!! im jumping up and down with excitement you understand exactly what im trying to say (DANCING)
Deletei totally agree with you nano.We live in the McLuhan world were everything has gone digital and we are at a peak point were journalist are no longer relevant.i personally agree that social media is eradicating the traditional media in a quicker way.i mean look at the beauty of social networks they are able to reach were traditional media can reach. For me id say social media is the future.
ReplyDeleteit certainly is the future Dineo but in that future lets not forget our journalists and their relevance :) thanx for your comment
DeleteI must say I like you point about print media being threatened we no longer have time to buy newspapers when we can actually read news online but it still depends on which site or media you are getting those news from, not every social media can provide with factual hard news
ReplyDeleteI feel the print media part you got it wrong! when you said,''Print media should feel threatened by social media as less and lesser people buy newspapers and magazines because every current..'' print media will always play a big part in our lives.
ReplyDeletethank you for your comment
DeleteHey Nano. I absolutely agree hey, as much as the digital age is slowly but surely taking over I also think that journalists will remain relevant irrespective of social media. lol and that was a nice track to choose.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm glad you loved that track!! ***SMILES***
DeleteI get you Nano, do I agree with you no!!!!! we all citizen journos we no longer have to depend on the professional journalist for factual news most of us using social media I think we are intellectuals you can tell if this story is true or what
ReplyDeleteok Howard, i understand your argument, but whats stopping me from just creating a story out of the blue. Journalists are the to direct us, they can reach reliable sources better than any citizen journalist.
DeleteYes i agree with u Nano,i used to buy Newspaper every morning, but hey thanks to Social Media i get every mogozi antytime,no need to wait for the next day
ReplyDelete... so journalists will always have that relevance in our lives. i'm glad you agree, did you listen to the song?
DeleteI agree with you. Yes, anyone can break the news, but it takes skills and accurate knowledge to be able to write a story that people are able to understand. Only a trained writer is able to bring credible and well informed publications. So journalists are very much still needed in this day and age.
ReplyDeletethank you, i feel journalists teach us way more than we think.
